Social media management and marketing tools in 2019 - a very busy landscape

We set out to review the best social media management and marketing tools in existence in 2019.

Do you know how many social media tools are out there? Turns out, a lot.

And guess what? They all claim pretty much the same thing. They are the ultimate solution. The last product you will ever need. But... none of them are... Literally none offer everything.

I examined all of the social media tools I could find. That's around 100 products that could be described as 'full' social media management solutions! 100+!

I did not review smaller or more focused tools that may also help with social media management or marketing. That will be a separate post that will come soon.

For easier digestion of this huge list, we divided the products into a few categories. They are not mutually exclusive. But it should help with the overview of the information presented.

How the reviews are done

Whenever they offered a free plan, I tried to create an account and take a look.

If creating a 'free' account meant me giving out my payment information, I naturally didn't do that. I also did not go through the whole 'request a demo account' type thing. Forgetting to unsubscribe after the trial, or going through someone's sales funnel, does not sound like fun.

I did light or medium examination and testing of the features. The evaluations of value take into account the prices and the features that you get. Those are numerical values assigned by me. They are as objective as I could make them. The points assigned for the value come from my own needs and experience.

There was a persona I had in mind while doing this. It was a busy, broke solopreneur who manages social media promotion of a product or a service. They do the job by themselves. The entire review is done through those lenses.

For easier scoring, I divided the features into three contexts. Those are the three most essential contexts of social media management and marketing: grow, engage and create.

I try to be as objective as possible. But in the end, there are a lot of things that are just a matter of personal preference. Keep that in mind, and make your own judgement in the end.

The formula

The formula for assigning value looks like this:

● For the free plan, if offered at all: (Grow Features Points + Engage Features Points + Create Features Points)
● For the paid plan: (Grow Features Points + Engage Features Points + Create Features Points) / (Price per social media account for the cheapest plan) + 1. If the tool offers unlimited accounts, we will count that as 20 accounts.
Ok, strap on your seatbelts, let's go!

Complete social media management solutions

We will start with the tools that offer all of the critical features you need. Or at least they try to. The tools that provide ways and workflows for audience growth, engagement and content creation and management will be considered here. Naturally, only a few tools fit this description.

HustleCool

HustleCool Dashboard

category: versatile
free plan: yes
trial: currently all plans are free forever, so no need for trial
credit card info required on register: no
ease of use: very easy
grow power (free): 9
engage power (free): 7
create power (free): 9
value (free): (9 + 7 + 9) = 25
monthly price for cheapest plan: only free accounts at the moment
accounts in cheapest plan: only free accounts at the moment
monthly price per account: only free accounts at the moment
grow power (cheapest plan): only free accounts at the moment
engage power (cheapest plan): only free accounts at the moment
create power (cheapest plan): only free accounts at the moment
value power (cheapest plan): only free accounts at the moment

Why is HustleCool the best? A deceptively complex question. Yet one so simple to answer.

We have it all. We present it simply and intuitively. And we're completely free!

If we don't have a feature right now, it means we're working on it.

What we provide is a new way to look at social media management and marketing.

As in many other crafts, the master is highly dependant on the tools of the trade. HustleCool is a tool that has learned a lot from general sales and marketing practices, other social media tools and customer relationship solutions.

After all that learning, we've reflected thoroughly on both the successes and mistakes. By working closely with our partners and early adopters, we've completely reimagined the way organic marketing is done on social media at scale.

Our secret ingredient? We understand that it's about the people. Both the marketer and the consumer.

We need to save the time that you waste. Going around different browser tabs. Logging in and out of profiles. Scrambling through spreadsheets and content sources.

You can then spend more time on what really matters: creating better content, bringing value to the table, engaging with the customer.

The basic moving parts of any social media strategy rarely change.

No matter the social network, the number of profiles being managed, or the number or type of people, brands or products being promoted, the essential goals are usually the same: Grow the audience. Have them engaged by entertaining or educating them, or simply by being present. Create valuable content.

By extracting these goals into simple and specific contexts aimed at simplifying their execution, we've come to the three most important parts of HustleCool: Grow, Engage, and Create.

By dividing the everyday tasks into these three buckets, we're already streamlining the path to faster work completion. In fact, we noticed that several of the tools on this list have already adopted our way of doing things after some time.

In Grow, we provide every possible piece of information available on the social network for your leads. Plus every tool you might need to further simplify your process and decision making.

Engage makes it easy to stay on the radars of your followers and fans. You easily entice them to reciprocate the value you offer to them.

The Create context enables you to set up a lot of the moving parts of your strategy just once, and then just follow a simple daily execution plan. All of that without sacrificing value. You still produce unique and creative content and experience for your followers.

All coming together in one complete, beautiful dashboard with only one level of navigation, simple to understand and use daily.

TweetDeck

TweetDeck Dashboard
category: versatile
free plan: yes
trial: only free accounts
credit card info required on register: no
ease of use: lots of features, still relatively easy
grow power (free): 5
engage power (free): 7
create power (free): 4
value (free): (5 + 7 + 4) = 16
monthly price for cheapest plan: only free accounts

monthly price per account: only free accounts
grow power (cheapest plan): only free accounts
engage power (cheapest plan): only free accounts
create power (cheapest plan): only free accounts
value power (cheapest plan): only free accounts

TweetDeck does not exactly belong in this list. It is not a social media tool. It is a Twitter-only tool.

That said, it is a pretty good one. Probably the originator of the streams feature, which are now heavily copied by many other tools. The best part about TweetDeck? It is forever free. That said, it does not offer many advanced features.

Gramto

Gramto Dashboard
category: versatile
free plan: no
trial: 3 days
credit card info required on register: no
ease of use: fairly easy it seems
grow power (free): no free accounts

engage power (cheapest plan): 8
create power (cheapest plan): 8
value power (cheapest plan): (7 + 8 + 8) / (5 + 1) = 3.83

This tools seems to only work with Instagram. Pretty clean dashboard, I must say I liked it.

Features include calendar and inbox, but also some automation. Which makes this tool more complete than the standard issue calendar + inbox product commonly found later on this list.

Eclincher

Eclincher Dashboard
category: versatile

trial: 14 days
credit card info required on register: no
ease of use: pretty standard look and feel
grow power (free): no free accounts
engage power (free): no free accounts

engage power (cheapest plan): 8
create power (cheapest plan): 8
value power (cheapest plan): (2 + 8 + 8) / (5.9 + 1) = 2.60

Eclincher is a product rich in features.

It does not seem to have a lot of features about growing your audience. But it does offer some basic follow functionalities.

Other basic social media actions are included as well. Besides that, it does offer scheduling and an inbox.

All of that makes it a bit more feature complete than the run-of-the-mill social media tool.

Communit

Communit Dashboard
category: versatile

credit card info required on register: no
ease of use: dashboard could be cleaner
grow power (free): 8

monthly price for cheapest plan: 20 USD

grow power (cheapest plan): 8
engage power (cheapest plan): 7
create power (cheapest plan): 8
value power (cheapest plan): (8 + 7 + 8) / (10 + 1) = 2.09

Even though it seems a bit cluttered, I could immediately understand this product. Mostly because it had a strong accent on growing an audience. Only a few products on this list do that.

Because that was one of my main areas of focus with HustleCool, I respect such products.

A pretty versatile solution in general.

Seems to lack Instagram though, which is a bit disappointing. And again, cleaning up that dashboard would be great too.

Mention

Mention Dashboard

engage power (cheapest plan): 6
create power (cheapest plan): 6
value power (cheapest plan): (6 + 6 + 6) / (14.5 + 1) = 1.16

I think I remember a time when Mention had a lot less features.

I like them a lot more now.

Seems like they even have some grow features in the Influencers tab.

The Feed would be for engaging and the Publish tab is obviously for content.

They are primarily a social listening tool though.

Booking a demo for registration is not something I will do for this review.

Judging from the product description, I would say this is a pretty versatile product. Meaning grow, engage and schedule features are offered.

No pricing information neither.

Pilot Poster

Pilot Poster Dashboard

value power (cheapest plan): (6 + 6 + 7) / (2 + 1) = 6.33

A tool used for posting in Facebook groups, primarily.

Simple, clean dashboard. What I like most is that is does try to achieve completeness.

Features like inviting users to join to groups for example, that is a growth feature. Responding to comments takes care of engagement, and the publishing tab is about scheduling.

A very decent tool in my opinion.

TailWind

By popular wisdom, this is one of the best products for Pinterest out there.

It also includes Instagram features. But those are all the supported networks.

Most of the functionality is around scheduling.

Dashboard felt a bit cluttered.

The tribes feature is pretty cool though, helpful for growing an audience.

They also have some automatic posting features. Sadly, you risk reduced reach when using those.

Tools with scheduling and engagement features

Seems like most of the tools fit into this category. Many are doing a very good job at either one or both of these categories. For some reason, the companies that have built these products have decided not to include any or very minimal audience growth features.

ViralTag

ViralTag Dashboard

engage power (cheapest plan): 7

value power (cheapest plan): (0 + 7 + 8) / (2.9 + 1) = 3.85

Good looking interface.

Publishing features include scheduling, content discovery and curation. That is a pretty strong create game.

There seems to be a social inbox feature too. But that was not included in the trial account.

Coschedule

Coschedul Dashboard

ease of use: not the easiest product to use I must say
grow power (free): no free accounts

monthly price for cheapest plan: 29 USD
accounts in cheapest plan: 10, if I'm not mistaken

engage power (cheapest plan): 7
create power (cheapest plan): 8
value power (cheapest plan): (0 + 7 + 8) / (2.9 + 1) = 3.85

Pretty detailed onboarding process.

App seems to have some interesting features. The main areas of focus are post scheduling and conversation management.

Not the smoothest user experience overall though.

Sendible

Sendible Dashboard
category: schedule, engage
free plan: trial only it seems (let me know if I've misunderstood)
trial: 30 days
credit card info required on register: they try to get this, but you can avoid it
ease of use: lots of features but nicely done, only moderate complexity
grow power (free): no free accounts
engage power (free): no free accounts
create power (free): no free accounts
value (free): no free accounts
monthly price for cheapest plan: 29 USD
accounts in cheapest plan: 5
monthly price per account: 5.8
grow power (cheapest plan): 1
engage power (cheapest plan): 8
create power (cheapest plan): 9
value power (cheapest plan): (1 + 8 + 9) / (5.8 + 1) = 2.65

Nice looking interface.

Sendible are also packed with features, so some complexity in the design is inevitable.

Nothing for growing your audience. Their approach to engagement has a lot of pros. Their create features are one of the best.

The pricing isn't really clear. The starter plan allows for 12 'services'. Each service lets you access a part of the features. Their pricing page suggests managing one account fully needs about 4 services.

One of those mysterious companies with little real information on their landing page.

The only way to try the app was to schedule a demo, which is something that was not part of the process of evaluating these tools.

I try to avoid judging a book by its cover. In this case, it's the only alternative.

Browsing through the website material, I may have gotten a sense of the app's features. I expect the typical set of schedule and inbox features.

Interface seems kind of clean based on the screenshots of the app's dashboard.

An established product in the social media management industry.

Nice, clean interface. But still, some tasks can be more complex than they need to be.

They used to have growth features. It seems that they have been forced to remove them by Twitter. Such a shame.

Still, they do have a very strong set of scheduling and some engagement features.

Not a typical social media management tool. Focused primarily around influencers.

You can register both as an agency and an influencer. I tried the agency route, but could not finish creating a campaign. Seems like there was some sort of a bug.

You can search for influencers as well. That might be useful, but right now is not offering some very detailed information.

But there were some small issues later. Not really bugs probably, just some unexpected behaviours.

I believe I have seen MavSocial in some recommendations around the Internet.

But when I tried to create an account, I couldn't finish the task. Seems like they should fix some bugs in the registration process.

Until then, this product will remain unreviewed.

An Instagram scheduling app, with some mention functionality.

There is a free plan as well, excluding some features naturally.

It does require an Instagram business app connected to a Facebook page. I did not have such an account handy, so this review will be postponed.

The latest Instagram API is not very welcoming to social media products. Still, Planoly are trying to do a good job of working with it.

You can add either a personal or a business account. Lots of scheduling functionality.

Dashboard seemed a bit cluttered.

The only supported channel is Instagram it seems.

Onboarding was a bit tedious.

Can't really blame Iconosquare though, the latest Facebook changes kinda force products to do this.

Fetching the data after adding the page takes some time.

What I did not like is that I was not able to look around the app while that was going on.

Whole experience was a bit clunky.

One of the few products that I really liked.

Nice, clean design.

They offer grow features, although only automated ones. Same goes for engagement, you can set up automated liking.

Which may not be such a good thing soon, given the recent penalties against automation on many networks.

But they are making a real effort.

Scheduling features are included too.

Conceptual design reminds me of HustleCool in some ways. If they were only free as well... :).

One of the most common complaints about Hootsuite is that it feels complicated and clunky.

Usually I try to defend the tools that tend to look like this because they're usually packed with a lot of features. Hootsuite is indeed packed with features.

Yet, I have to go with the crowd on this one. Hootsuite could have done a better job on having a cleaner interface.

Their tabs and streams structure does make sense logically, but is not really pleasing to work with for some reason.

Still, HootSuite is among the leading products in the social media management niche. They truly do offer a lot of value for money.

A schedule and inbox tool.

At least that's what they say.

The account registration does not work. So we can never really know.

Pricing seems strange too. There are two plans, and both offer the same feature.

Not even sure if this is a real app or just a marketing prototype.

Zoho is an established company with a plethora of marketing tools. The social media package is one of their offerings.

It is a fairly complete product, schedule-wise. They do have some inbox features too. Nothing for growing your audience it seems, no unusual features neither.

I believe the company primarily builds for enterprise businesses.

But there is a free account you can use after your trial expires. It's just not mentioned on the pricing page.

A bit on the pricey side it seems, there is much better value for money.

value power (cheapest plan): (0 + 5 + 7) / (12.5 + 1) = 0.89

Statusbrew was one of the first social media managers I personally used.

Things have changed a lot from that time it seems.

Adding my Instagram account didn't work.

They used to have very strong grow features. Now they have none. The engage features are all about the inbox. My messages were not synced though. Seems like they have converged towards the axis of publish-centered tools. They do have RSS integrations. Content pool is a paid feature which I assume is some sort of a library for content. I liked the way the planner was done, being able to easily switch between list and calendar.

Other than that, I must say I was a little disappointed.

Statusbrew used to be one of my favourite tools. Can't say that anymore.

AgoraPulse are an established brand in the social media management sphere.

They have some engage features. Not just the inbox as is the case with most of the products on the list. You can interact with people that have engaged your social media accounts.

Good publishing features, strong create game.

No grow or outreach features.

Seems like they don't offer a free plan. You only get a trial of 15 days.

AgoraPulse also allow grouping of accounts. Not saying they saw it from us, but we did get there first :).

The design of the dashboard is not like your typical modern dashboard. Not saying it's bad, it just feels weird I guess.

In BleuPage's case, looks can be deceiving. They offer a lot of features on the publishing side.

Inbox monitoring on the engage front. Nothing on the grow front. They do offer full automation of your content.

That is not something you see too much. Probably because the social media networks themselves started to restrict automation.

Still, it's good to see some variety.

Social media scheduling tools

There are a lot of tools that only offer some sort of scheduling functionality. If they do offer something more, it is usually in a very limited capacity. While not as useful as the more complete solutions, they can still help, especially when done well. Often they have content libraries, content sources, calendars and lists, schedule times, various tools helpful for mass content creation and distribution.

Seems like scheduling features are primary for this app.

Unlike all of the other apps on this list, this is a native mobile app. It is only available for Android right now.

That kinda limits its usefulness since most of the work a social media marketer does is done on a desktop.

It has good scheduling features, and basic grow and engage functionalities.

Whole experience was kinda slow, non-responsive.

Anyway, lots of schedule features, not much else going on.

Their features provide finding and scheduling content.

Buffer's interface is clean and elegant.

As one of the first products on social media to shine and become a renowned brand, they have a very good scheduling solution. What you do on buffer is simple, you set up your calendar and you schedule your content. Their browser extension helps you along the way a lot.

You get 8 social media accounts without paying. The free accounts get 10 posts per day. That number goes up to 100 if you're subscribed to the Pro plan for $15/month.

There's another product from Buffer called Reply which is supposed to cover engaging your audience, but that's a separate dashboard for a separate subscription. Wasn't sure how to rate them because of this. Reply seems to be a bit pricier at one social media account for $50/month and no free plan.

I decided to just rate the original app, which is pretty much just a scheduler.

Mostly focused on scheduling, no grow and engage features.

Adding an account worked, but when trying to use the project features I ran into some bugs.

Also, created a draft that later was gone.

Could be a cool tool, but they probably need to iron out some stuff.

The onboarding was well thought of, but poorly implemented. Had some difficulties understanding everything.

You can group several social media accounts into a client.

Calendar and analytics features, no grow nor engage.

I think what was strange to me is that this is not a single page application. Which is the case for most products of this type. I guess I've just forgot about page refreshes.

But!

The best part about this product is that it seems to be completely free.

Couldn't find actual information on this. But I paid nothing when signing up. Trial period was not mentioned anywhere. There is no possibility for upgrading. It is a bit confusing, but this product may be free at the moment.

Now this is a set of tools with some cool ideas.

They do have the standard scheduling features.

But they also have an enhance tool, which does some small improvements to your posts. It won't do any crazy magic, but it will save you time.

Design is well thought of too. One of my favorite products on this list.

Pricing is a bit complicated, since their contexts are all charged as separate products.

Audience engagement tools

There are not that many tools that only focus on communicating or engaging with your audience. But there are some that try to go deep into this. Some cool solutions can be found in here.

Social media automation tools

Some of the tools in the other categories also have automation features. But the products under this section are primarily focused on that area. Given how automation is becoming more and more punishable and restricted by the social media platforms, I believe these tools not to have a very bright future. However, they are still very useful.

But it does more than just following. It is actually pretty complete, you get follow/unfollow, liking and commenting, reposting, pretty much all of it.

The reason I'm kinda against bots is that it is only a question of time when they start getting banned.

But as far as bots go, this one seems pretty cool.

Jarvee is the most popular automation tool for social media.

As it is common for automation software, it is a desktop app.

The typical startup or brand marketer may never use Jarvee. But, it is well suited for some social media marketing methods.

They may err on the side of blackhat, more often they are just in the gray area.

It is packed with features, no doubt about it.

Since I was considering adding automation features at one point, I can understand a lot of their decisions.

HustleCool didn't go there. But if it did, Jarvee would be one model of a successful automation product we would look up to.

Haven't tried many other bots, but I believe Jarvee will get your job done if that's what you're after.

Registration process was rocky.

Somehow made it through and signed up. And then, when I thought I will log in to a dashboard...

A 404 error.

Strangest things. Could be a marketing landing page only with no app at all.

This should be a growth tool, focused on audiences.

But registration is impossible without requesting a demo.

Not primarily a social media management tool.

Though it seems that some social media features are available. I was not able to determine precisely which ones.

Registration required asking for a demo account, so this review remains only partial.

Pricing was not shown.

Conclusion

Wow... we actually did it! Almost 100 tools, tried out and reviewed!

What did we learn?

I'm gonna go against my fellow SAAS owners and founders here and state something that might displease them. Most products here are ridiculously overpriced.

Yes, we all work hard, I get it. My usual workday is 12 hours, and my weekend is one (or sometime half) day. But still, if one regular software developer (me) could build, market and support all of these features, we should set a high standard for all these bigger teams and companies.

What are those huge teams all doing? The end result for the end user (you) is somehow that the prices go up. Shouldn't it be the other way around?

Sure, if you're an agency and are just handing over the bill to the client, it doesn't mean that much if the price is $350 or $5 per month. Many of these companies take advantage of that fact. Some even inflate their prices so that they look more "enterprise".

I get it, pricing is difficult and only the market is right in the end. But who gets hurt here? The solopreneurs, indie developers, young startups (like me, and maybe you). They have to do it all by themselves, including promoting on social media for free and maintaining an active presence there.

Well, HustleCool is aimed primarily at making the lives of those groups of people easier. I discovered that I could do that and also offer the product for free at this time, possibly charging a crazy small fee in the future. The agencies and the bigger marketing teams are free to take advantage of that discovery if they please.

Other than that, there is one more lesson. It is actually even more important.

Sometimes, the masters are only as good as the tool allows them to be.

It is we, the tool creators, that must push the boundaries and offer new ways of thinking.

Sometimes a feature or a process or a flow can take your creativity and strategy into a whole other level. That is why we constantly push new features.

I have nothing but respect for other products that do the same. But those are the exception rather than the rule.

About half of the products here offer nothing more than a well designed scheduler for posts. Not saying that's bad.

But you deserve more. You deserve a tool that challenges you and makes you think in new ways about social media growth.

HustleCool is not the first social media tool. It's not the last one neither. And no matter how hard we try, it may never be the only one.

Still, HustleCool will be the most valuable one overall. That much I promise.

It will also try and be the simplest one to use, despite having all the possible features you might need. I do mean "all" here, we're pretty Scarface about this and we'll really go to great lengths to have it all.

HustleCool will try and be free for as long as possible. If it doesn't succeed it will certainly be the best value for money solution.

That is what HustleCool is all about. We aim for the top, and we may as well be there already. Go ahead, give it a spin, it's awesome and free!
